How Does Stigma Affect the Diagnosis and Treatment of IBS and Celiac Disease?

Johannah Ruddy, M.Ed, Tiffany Taft, PsyD, and Jim Kantidakis, PsyD discuss how stigma related to many DGBIs, especially IBS and Celiac Disease, affects the patient. There are three main types of stigma:

  1. Perceived Stigma: The patients perception that other people hold negative opinions about them because of their disease.
  2. Inacted (or Experienced) Stigma: The behavior of others because you have a disease.
  3. Internalized Stigma: When the patients believe the things that people say about people that have their particular disease.
