AGA Institute- Rome Foundation Lectureship on Making Treatment Choices for Functional GI Disorders (DGBI) to be held on May 20, 2019 at Digestive Disease Week 2019
RALEIGH, NC (May 1, 2019) – The AGA Institute, in conjunction with The Rome
Foundation, will present a lectureship entitled Making Treatment Choices for Patients
with Functional GI Disorders (DGBI) on May 20, 2019 at Digestive Disease Week 2019.
The event will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 33ABC of the San Diego
Convention Center.
“Through our research at The Rome Foundation, we have redefined Functional GI
Disorders (DGBIs) and the connection between the brain and the gut,” commented
Douglas A. Drossman MD, President of the Rome Foundation and moderator for the
symposium. “We know that psychological factors, such as depression, anxiety, and
stress can have an adverse effect and influence the development and activity of IBS
and conversely GI disturbances can affect one’s psychological state. It is critical for
clinicians to understand the treatment approaches and how to manage these patients
effectively”
The lectureship will discuss psychological comorbidities that might influence treatment
choices, the role of biomarkers and patient management as well as recognizing other
clinical factors that affect treatment. “For clinicians to be able to manage patients with
these complex disorders, certain clinical factors, including identifying psychological
comorbidities, are essential to our understanding and management; in addition,
biomarkers are becoming a developing area of research that may help target better
treatments for our patients.” says Jan Tack, MD one of the presenters of the
symposium.” Other speakers in this symposium include Lin Chang, MD and Magnus
Simren, MD.
“This lectureship is part of The Rome Foundation’s mission to provide educational
information in the areas of neuro gastroenterology and brain-gut interactions and this
includes the influence of psychosocial and other factors on GI illness and eventually the
role of biomarkers to diagnose and optimize treatment,” added Dr. Drossman.
The Rome Foundation will also be exhibiting at DDW 2019, and Rome IV Educational
materials will also be available at The Rome Foundation Booth #746 in Foundation Row
at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) in San Diego, CA May 19-21, 2019.
About The Rome Foundation
The mission of The Rome Foundation is to improve the lives of people with functional GI
disorders. As an independent not-for-profit organization, The Rome Foundation
provides support for scientific research and the development of educational information
to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders (DGBI).
For over 20 years, The Rome Foundation has sought to legitimize and update our
knowledge of the DGBIs. This has been accomplished by bringing together scientists
and clinicians from around the world to classify and critically appraise the science of
gastrointestinal function and dysfunction. This work has enabled the experts convened
by the Foundation to make recommendations for diagnosis and treatment that can be
applied in research and clinical practice. These recommendations are provided in the
Foundation’s publications and reflected in the Rome diagnostic criteria.
