halpert_lgDr. Halpert is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Gastroenterology at the Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, and also a gastroenterologist in private practice at Pentucket Medical Associates in Haverhill, MA. Dr. Halpert received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Charles University School of Medicine in Prague, Czech Republic. After her internal medicine training in UK and US, she completed gastroenterology fellowships at St. Louis University. She received additional subspecialty training in functional bowel disorders at the Center for Functional Gastrointestinal & Motility Disorders at the University of North Carolina, under the mentorship of Dr. Douglas Drossman.

Dr. Halpert’s clinical practice consists primarily of patients with complicated functional bowel disorders. Her main research interests include studying the patient perspective, patient educational needs and how to provide effective patient education, as well as the physician -patient relationship/ communication. Dr. Halpert has presented her research findings at national gastroenterology meetings and has published numerous manuscripts and several book chapters. She has participated in the development of patient educational materials (brochures and videos) and number of patient- physician communication workshops. She has been an invited speaker to various national meetings and lectures on the clinical management of functional bowel disorders and on the physician-patient communication. She has received several awards among which is the American College of Gastroenterology Clinical Investigator Research Award.

Dr. Halpert mentors gastroenterology fellows at Boston University, where she has established monthly conferences in functional gastrointestinal disorders. She serves as at hoc reviewer for number of gastroenterology journals, e.g. The American Journal of Gastroenterology and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is on the advisory board of several pharmaceutical companies. She is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, American Academy on Physician and Patient and the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders.
